1989 Cold Case Homicide Victim Identified 32 Years Later in Marion County

Marion County Sheriff Matt Bayles announced that he will have a press conference on Tuesday October 19, 2021, at 9:00 AM, to announce that a victim in a cold case homicide from July of 1989 has recently been identified. This identification was made possible through a collaborative effort of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Ohio Attorney General’s Office, Bureau of Criminal Investigation Crime Lab and the DNA Doe Project.

In July of 1989 a deceased male was discovered in Flat Run Creek in Marion County Ohio. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office was unable to identify the victim and the case went Cold for many years to follow. Sheriff’s Office investigators having used genetic genealogy on another case decided to try the same process with this case. They contacted DNA Doe Project once again and through their effort and the effort of the FBI and Ohio BCI Laboratories a match to John Kraicinsky was made.

An investigation revealed that John had last been in contact with family in July of 1989. Kraicinsky was never reported missing as the family had a belief that John may have just moved away to start another life.

Sheriff Matt Bayles stated “we have several other Cold Cases that we will continue to work to obtain justice for victims and closure for families.”
