An 88-year-old retired orthodontist from Vail, Colorado, has become the oldest person to climb to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.
A granddaughter of Dr. Fred Distelhorst was already in Tanzania volunteering with a charity group when she signed Fred up to take the hike to the top.
This granddaughter – Ellen – knew her grandfather stayed physically fit by biking and skiing, so she knew he’d be strong enough to make the attempt.
Fred made a practice run up a peak near his home before hopping on a bunch of connecting flights to Kilimanjaro, where Ellen and Fred not only reached the summit – over 19,000 feet above sea level – but they also used their adventure to raise money for the children’s home where Ellen has been volunteering.
