Former WMRN Radio Icon Passes Away

(Marion, OH) -- The Marion community is mourning the loss of broadcaster and the namesake of Ohio's official groundhog, Charlie Evers, who passed away at age 85. Evers' family confirmed yesterday he had passed away on Sunday and is survived by Jeanne, his wife of 45-years, and their three daughters. Evers started his radio career in 1949 in Marion while also writing weekly columns for the newspaper and was elected to the Ohio Radio-Television Broadcaster's Hall of Fame in Akron. Evers created many local events, including the peanut push and the Marion Groundhog Day celebration with the main attraction named Buckeye Chuck in his honor.
