Fatal Shooting in Near Downtown Carey Sunday Morning!

On Sunday July10, 2022, at 0757 Hours, The Wyandot County Sheriff's Office received a call from the Carey Police Department requesting assistance for a male subject seen walking down Newhard Street in his underwear. As deputies were responding to the scene additional information was received that the male subject was breaking windows of houses and carrying a gun.

When deputies from the Wyandot County Sheriff's Office arrived in Carey, they were confronted with a male subject who was holding a handgun and a knife in the 500 block of N. Vance Street. The male subject who was identified as Melvin E. Nash (age 51) of 505 N. Vance Street Carey, Ohio, was taken into custody by law enforcement officers from the Wyandot County Sheriff's Office and the Carey Police Department, Melvin E. Nash is currently being held at the Wyandot County Jail.

A male subject was found lying in front of 514 N. Vance St. Carey and was found to be suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The male subject was transported to Blanchard Valley Hospital in Findlay, where he died from his injuries. His name is not being released pending notification of family members.

Detectives from the Wyandot County Major Crimes Unit were requested by the Carey Police Department to conduct the investigation. The Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) was contacted to process the crime scene and the Major Crimes Unit is currently serving search warrants and conducting interviews. The investigation was delayed after investigators found homemade incendiary devices in 505 N. Vance Street.

The Lima/Allen County and Toledo Bomb Squads were called to the scene and removed 4 suspected devices.

The crime scene is still being processed and the investigation is still active.

Charges are pending against Melvin E. Nash per review of the Wyandot County Prosecutor.

Assisting MCU with the investigation are the Wyandot County Sheriff's Office, Carey Police Department, Upper Sandusky Police Department, Wyandot County Prosecutor's Office and BCI.
