On March 4, 2025, Humane Agent Scott Mills of the Marion County Dog Wardens Office responded to the 6000 Block of Marion Agosta Road for a report of a deceased dog. Upon arrival, Humane Agent Mills recovered the dog’s body which was later sent for a necropsy.
After a 3-week long investigation, Humane Agent Mills, Deputies from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, and members of the Marion Area Humane Society executed a search warrant at the residence on March 25, 2025. During that time, authorities seized 9 dogs of varying breeds, an aquatic turtle, and a leopard gecko.
At the conclusion of the investigation, Whitney Moore and Brandon Johnson of New Bloomington were charged with 64 counts of Prohibitions Concerning Companion Animals. Four of the charges are 5th degree felonies, 20 are first degree misdemeanors, and 40 are second degree misdemeanors. Three of the dogs were surrendered and are currently available for adoption at the Marion County Dog Pound. The remaining animals that were rescued are being held pending the outcome of the court cases.
Sheriff Bayles would like to recognize the relentless work and efforts of the Humane Agent Mills and the Deputies involved in this investigation. Sheriff Bayles stated, “The conditions that these poor animals were living in was completely unacceptable. We will always work tirelessly to protect those who cannot protect themselves and bring those to justice that choose to treat other living creatures with such incredible disregard for their welfare.
Sheriff Bayles would like to extend a special “Thank you” to the Marion Area Humane Society, Pet Supplies Plus, Petco and community members for their assistance in this rescue and for donating items to care for the reptiles that were seized.
